THE STORY AS I KNOW IT

A piece by William Everett Brockman is Orange County (Va.) Families and Their Marriages. Much of the following information comes from that piece which was published by Burgess Publishing Ct. of Minneapolis.

Mary Madison was born about 1680 possibly in Orange County VA. Her parents may have been John Madison and Isabella Minor Todd.

The families Pettie, Madison, Henderson, Woolfolk and Sim all had land adjoining in Orange County and their sons and daughters married each other.

Mary Madison wed Samuel Brockman about 1704. It is believed they lived on the Madison estate when they started out. She was either Mary Madison, sister to John Madison, or Mary Minor, sister of Isabelle Minor, wife of John Madison. Either way she was the aunt of President James Madison. They had seven children according to W.E. Brockman. They were:
1. Samuel Brockman, born about 1706, wed Rebecker (maybe) Salmon by 1744. He died 1790.
2. William Brockman, born 1708, wed Elizabeth Mason by 1748. His will was proved 1809. He was "of Albemarle".
3. Elizabeth Brockman, born about 1710, wed Anthony Street. She died after 1800.
4. John Brockman, born about 1712, wed Mary Collins by 1734. He died 1756.
5. Mary Brockman born about 1715 wed Richard Hunt Singleton.
6. Rachel Brockman, born about 1717, wed John Rogers
7. daughter (maybe Susanna) born about 1720, Mr. Haley

The Orange county VA Deed Books 1 & 2 for 1735 - 1738 compiled by John Frederick Dorman places Samuel. Daniel Cook of St. Mark's Parish sold land in the fork of Purmunky River. It bordered on Samuel Brockmans' land.

Samuel Brockman wrote his will in November 1762. It was proved in 1766 and names "my daughter Elizabeth Street". It is listed in Pamunkey Neighbors, a history of early Orange County VA.

His wife was still alive and the division of the estate was not to take place until her death. On January 15, 1776 that division took place and can be found in Orange County Will Book 3, page 123. It was divided thus:
Anthony Street 1 negro Jinney
Samuel Brockman 1 negro Dinah
John Webb 1 negro Milley (at)
Samuel Brockman Jr.1 negro Fan
Jonathan Haley 1 negro Jack (at)
William Brockman 2 negros Rubin & Selah
Rachel Roger 1 negro David
Jonathan Henderson
1 negro Lewis (at)

I don't know what "at" means.

Then it stated that a number of negroes were sold and the value divided among the family.

The original order to settle and divide the estate was given in Orange County Court on Sept 27, 1775. We must assume that Mary had shortly before that. Samuel and William Brockman were executors.

It is not known where Samuel and Mary Brockman are buried.
