ELIZABETH BROCKMAN
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
With the Brockman family we are reaching as far back as the 14th century. William Everett Brockman has written A Genealogical chart of the Brockmans. The story needs confirmation. An English book Kent Parish Records, Newington Marriages lists at least four Brockmans from a period of 1566 to 1623. They are in the place and at the time William E. Brockman asserts. One of the four matches the genealogical data exactly. The other four are not connected to our line.
Elizabeth Brockman was born about 1710 in Orange County, Virginia. Her parents were Samuel Brockman and Mary Madison. Mary was President James Madison's aunt. Elizabeth is the eleventh generation of known Brockmans. Her grandfather was an early immigrant to America from England, perhaps via Barbados.
Elizabeth married Anthony Street about 1734. They had at least five children and the website pattical@computerhut.netl gives 7:
1. Sarah Street, born about 1736
2. Samuel William Street, born 1737 wed Lurana, died 1811
3. Thomas Street, born 1738 wed Lucy
4 . unnamed female born 1741, died 1788
5. Elizabeth Street, born 1743 wed William Smith Sr. died 1830
6. Caty Street, born 1745 wed Micajah Cox died 1788
7. Frances Philadelphia Street born 1747 married Housand Harrill died 1835
The birth and death dates given above were from kalman@myweb.net We are trying to get her source documentation. This information suggests a contagious illness took at least three family members in a very short time. The unknown daughter, Caty and Anthony all died in 1788.
Confirmation of this family comes from two sources: Marriages of Some Virginia Residences 1607-1800 state that "Anthony Street wed Elizabeth Brockman, daughter of Samuel B" and the will of Samuel Brockman dated November 1762 and proved in 1766, name "my daughter Elizabeth Street". Finally, Anthony Street was listed to receive a bequest from the estate of Samuel Brockman. It is listed in Pamunkey Neighbors, a history of early Orange County VA.
Anthony Street's will dated 8/29/1788 and probated in Amherst County Virginia, listed five children. One daughter, name unknown died earlier that same year. She may not have married or had any children. Sarah either died young or was not their child. The children listed in the will were.:
1. Samuel
2. Thomas
3. A daughter (deceased Mrs.Cox). Her children Anthony, William, Elizabeth, Franky.
4. Franky
5. Elizabeth
Elizabeth died between 1800 and 1810. She is buried with Anthony and the site is currently being restored and preserved.
