MARGARET WILSON
It has been very hard to identify the maiden name of the wife of John Maddox, the immigrant in Virginia 1700. The name Wilson Maddox is found in many subsequent generations. There is the possibility that his wife's name was Margaret Wilson. It has also been suggested that his wife was Margaret Kent.
Margaret Wilson would have been born about 1670. Her parents are unknown. She would have married John Maddox about 1696 in Virginia.
There are a few other Wilsons in New Kent County at that time. St. Peter's parish registers notes that James Wilson was baptized in 1708. He was the son of William Wilson. Old Kent County. Some Account of the Planters, Plantations and Places in New Kent County by Malcolm H. Harris. He notes Jane Lane Wilson, widow, inherited a portion of her father's estate around 1700. He was Captain John Lane.
In 1700 John and Margaret Maddox appear in Virginia at a Quaker wedding. It really helps that the Quakers kept such extensive records. Everyone who attends a wedding signs the certificate.
From the St. Peter's parish register of New Kent Ct, Virginia records four children of John and Margaret Maddox. They are:
1. Sarah Maddox, baptized Sept 27, 1702,
2. Robert Maddox baptized Feb. 24, 1704/5
3. Susannah Maddox, baptized Oct 19, 1707
4. Michael Maddox baptized, May 31, 1713
5. Goochland court Orders May Court 1746 named John Maddox, the elder brother of Michael. John was born about 1697.
6. There is also a suggestion that there was an older sister, Elizabeth. She would have been born before the family became part of St. Peter's. She married Joseph Woodson. Joseph witnessed the will to his neighbor and maybe brother in law, John Maddox in Goochland County.
The St. Peter's parish Register notes John Maddox died Jan. 6,1718/19 and Margaret Maddox died Dec. 31, 1718. John would have been 80 years old if he had been the John from Cheshire. Margaret was probably a much younger woman.
It seems probably that there were more than one John Maddox in Virginia in 1700. Sorting out which John is our John and did they both marry Margarets is yet to be done.
