ELIZABETH MORELAND

Return to Family Index
Elizabeth (Betsy) Moreland was born in 1796 in Shenandoah
County,
Virginia the History of Trimble County.

A memoir, written about 1920 by Ernest
Greenwood Maddox about the Maddox family,
              lists her father as William
Moreland and her mother Priscilla Boswell. William
Moreland was said to be Irish and the Bozzle
family Dutch.  That may have been their history, but
we have not tracked the family beyond Maryland.  William
and Priscilla were married in Charles County
Maryland.  We can track William through
his will and properties.   There were many
Boswells in Prince George's County, just
north of Charles County, but I have never found a
reference to this Priscilla Boswell other than the
              Family Memoir.

William and Priscilla Moreland moved to Virginia
maybe late 1790 or 1791 with two small children.
Elizabeth Moreland was born there March 6, 1796 with
her twin, Jack.  William and Priscilla's
last child was born in 1800.  We believe it likely
that Priscilla died shortly there after, perhaps
complications of childbirth.  The family was still in
Shenandoah County in 1810. The 1810 Census, Virginia
Roll 71, page 6  shows the family to consist of

              1 male > 45 - William Moreland
2 males 10-15, Jack and Walter Moreland
              1 female 16-25 Martha
              1 female Elizabeth
              and 5 slaves.
No Priscilla.  Thus we believed she had died
              between 1800 and 1810.

By 1813 and maybe as early as 1812,  the family had
moved to Henry County Kentucky.  The family settled
on or near the Ohio river in the part of Henry county that
eventually became Trimble County.  Close by was the Maddox
family.  Betsy Moreland married William Maddox about
1817.  Betsy is never directly mentioned by name in
any document until her death certificate.  We have
only the Memoire & the inferences from the
census of Betsy by a female being the right age, in each
              10 year period.

William Maddox  is on the 1820
Shelby County Kentucky Census, page 165.  he is
              listed with 1 male, under 10, 1 male 26-44, and 1 female
              16-25
              with 1 slave.

Kentucky Counties were formed continuously in the early
19th century. In 1820 there was Shelby county just south
of Henry County.  By 1830 Oldham County had been
created from pieces of Shelby, Henry and Jefferson
counties.  In 1840 Trimble county has been created,
dividing Oldham almost in half. Trimble being
on the north east of Oldham.
It is very likely that the William Maddox
family was in the same place 1820, 1830 and
              1840.

The 1840 Census of Trimble County list William Maddox
as head of house hold with:
              1 male < 5, (George)
              1 male 15-20, (John W.)
              1 male 30-40, ( ? )
              1 male 50-60 (William W.)
              1 female <5, (Bettie)
              1 female 10-15,(Martha)
              1 female 40-50. (Elizabeth)

It is believed that Martha married in 1840 while
just 15.  So the 30-40 year old male is probably her
              first husband.

The 1850 Census for Trimble County list
William Maddox was a farmer 63 years old, born in
              Virginia,
Eliza Maddox age 52, born in Virginia,
              George age19 born in Kentucky,
Mary age 11 born in Kentucky.
The known children of William W. and Elizabeth
Maddox were listed in the Maddox Family History
Ernest Greenwood Maddox:: A copy can be made.

Perhaps "Fluty" was Mary on the 1850 census.
