DAVID MADDOX
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
Daniel Maddox was born about 1755 possibly in Charlotte County Virginia. The LDS IGI for Charlotte county, Virginia lists Robert Maddox and Sarah Roberts as parents of Daniel, born 1753, Wilson born 1754 and Nancy born 1756. I have no further proof of this fact. In fact there is no record of Robert Maddox ever living in Charlotte County. However, there are substantial records of Wilson Maddox and David Maddox both owning properties in this county from 1750. Either one could have been the father of Daniel.
This may be David's story. NOTE FOR FUTURE. What was the relationship between Wilson and David?
David Maddox was born about 1730 but John Maddox and Elizabeth Sherwood were not his parents We don't know who his parents were. It is believed he served in the French and Indian War in 1750 from Lunenberg County, VA.
In 1752 he married Jane Gwinn. She was of a Lunenberg family. The children we have found listed for them just don't make sense. They had children who later moved to Shelby County Kentucky.
David was listed on the Charlotte County Virginia tax list in 1787. He was a man of property owning 4 slaves, 4 horses and 20 cows. The other Maddoxs on the tax list could have been his sons. They were Wilson, Daniel and Zachariah.
In 1795 Daniel was in Shelby County Kentucky listed on the tax list as having 2 horses, 4 heads of cattle and no acres. Near by was Absolom Maddox with 1 horse and Wilson Maddox with 2 horses, 16 head of cattle and 150 acres on Gesses Creek. Daniel Maddox wed a second time to Nancy Willis on October 9,1798 in Shelby County. Thomas J. Gwin signed their license. Daniel and Nancy Maddox helped establish the Burks Branch Baptist Church about 1804. Daniel Maddox purchased land in 1817 in Shelby County.
The book KENTUCKY CALLED THEM by Gertrude E. Hewson contains the following notes of Maddox:
1807 Daniel Maddox had land on Corn & Spring Creeks. (page 196)
Jan 12, 1813, Daniel Maddox had 100 acres on Corn & Spring Creeks (page 233)
1817 was the last tax listing for Daniel Maddox.
Other names mentioned in the book include Wilson, David, Jacob, Sherwood, Sherwood Jr., Michael, William, James, and Nancy (widow of James).
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, VIRGINIA LEADS
Land records of Charlotte County Virginia 1765-1771 include the following names: Wilson Mattox, Michael Mattox, Richard Maddox, Nathan Maddox, David Mattox and wife Jean.
Charlotte County Virginia land went by patent to David Mattox Feb 26, 1765 and July 1768. Revolutionary War Records lists birthday of Wilson Maddox as Sept 30, 1757 and his wife, Delilah 1768. The 1787 tax records show that Wilson was "living free" or paid no taxes. That freedom from taxes was for county officials or ministers. Wilson Maddox is listed on 1790 Charlotte County Census as head of household of seven people. On Jan 28, 1781 Massey Maddox wed Joseph Reynolds. She was the daughter of Wilson Maddox. On Aug 24, 1799 Patty Maddox wed Francis Ryan. She was the daughter of David Maddox.
