ELIZABETH   RUGELEY

THE STORY AS I KNOW IT - and I know very little

Elizabeth Rugeley was born in England.  There are many many genealogies online that give her name, dates and family - all without giving sources.  There is one called Brinton_family that seems to have done a great deal of research and says he has sources, so  this is based on his work.  I still hope to find his sources so I can record them in this story.

Elizabeth Rugeley was born about 1490 in either Staffordshire, possible Sedgley or Middleton Warwickshire.  Middleton is just a few miles from Shenstone.  Both are just northeast of Birmingham. Warwick is just next to Stafford.  There is a town in Stafford called Rugeley, not too far north of Shenstone.  so either is quite possible.

Elizabeth Rugeley married John Grazebrook about 1510.  He was from a family with a long and very connected history in the Midlands. There are many pages in the Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica  on the Gresbrooke family of Staffordshire.  The XI generation on page 122 is of John Gresbrooke, "who inherited Gresbrok Hall and the estates" named for X.   His will notes Elizabeth, my wyfe and all my children.   But the children are not numbered or named except for the son who succeeded him at Gresbroke hall,  Robert Gresbroke. There is a statement which  I can't find right now that  they had a daughter who also ended up as part of our ancestry.
1 . Elizabeth Grazebrook born about 1512 wed John Brinton.  Their great-great grandson William Brinton moved to Pennsylvania 1684.
2.  Robert Grazebrook born about 1516 wed Ann Clayton.  Their great grandson was the father of William Brinton who moved to Pennsylvania 1684

Elizabeth and John Gresbroke  lived in Gresbrooke Hall, Sedgley Staffordshire where he was active in the community with a number of references to him.  When her husband, John Grazebrook died he left a will proved March 23 1546/7 "by his widow".  her oath was witnessed by Roland Rugley, gent.  From this the writers of the Miscellanea G et H, believed the wife was a daughter or sister of Rowland Rugeley.
