JAMES PENNOCK
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
The Pennock family was a leading Quaker family in colonial Pennsylvania. The descendants are numerous. Three known books have been written about them:
The Pennocks of Primitive Hall by George Valentine Massey II,
The Pusey Family by Pennock Pusey, and
Christopher Pennock Genealogy, compiled by Charles A. Rudolph, 1959.
James Pennock was born about 1780 in either Chester County Pennsylvania or New Castle County, Delaware. He was the fourth son of John Pennock and Elinor Pusey.
For some time John and Elinor lived on a farm in Delaware on Red Clay Creek. They ran a water corn mill and a sawmill. The property was owned by John's father Nathaniel Pennock. When John died intestate about 1786 , the farm was sold. James was just 6 years old. We don't know where his mother moved with her five children.
James married Mary Hayes on 10/1/1799. They had 3
1..John Pennock born in 1800 married Elizabeth Stevens.
2. Ann Pennock married Isaac Woodrow.
3. Hannah Pennock married Joshua White.
Mary died and James married a second time to Mary Thornbury. However, we don't know if they had any children.
They probably lived in Chester County but very little of their life is known. We do not know when James or either Mary died. The Quakers kept great records, but they tended to not give middle names. There are a number of James' and lots of Mary Pennocks.
