SARAH MARIS
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
Sarah Maris was born in in Haverford,
Chester County, (now Delaware County) Pennsylvania on 1st
month 31, 1697.   The calendar year began in
March. so this is probably March 31, 1697.  She was
the second child born to John Maris and Susannah
Lewis. From the Chester County Monthly
Meetings Card #1 on Maris family at Swarthmore College
                Quaker library.

Sarah Maris wed John Bennett on Sept 17,
1719 in Chester County PA at the Birmingham MM. from the Maris
Family card noted above. They were Quakers. They had
              at least 4 known children:
              1.  John Bennett Jr. born about 1720 wed 1. Hannah
                Seal 1745 and 2.  Ruth Way 1754.
              2.  Ann Bennett born c 1722 wed Nathaniel Pennock 1743.

              3.  William Bennett born 1731, wed Martha
                Jefferis 1749
              4.  James Bennett born Sept 10, 1734 wed Hannah
                Gilpin about 1760.

The boys names and birth dates were in the Pa Births, Delaware county 1682-1800 by John T. Humphrey, page 62. Ann Bennett was noted as daughter of John Bennett when she was granted the certificate to Concord MM to marry. In the New Garden Monthly Meeting Hinshaw records.
I do not know when John Bennett died, but when Sarah Maris Bennett wrote her will, he was noted as "late John Bennett". The will was written the 7th day 12th month, 1772. The unique dating process used by the Quakers ended in common use by 1752. Thus I think this would be Dec. 12, 1772. In the will Sarah mentions sons: John, William and James, daughter-in-law Hannah Bennett, must be Jame's wife. and grandson John Pennock. It looks to me that she signed it herself. I have a copy of the will. If you would like a copy, CONTACT US
Sarah Maris Bennett's will was proved Feb. 25,
1773.  She had said she was of the township of Pennsbury
in Chester County, Pennsybury is just to the
east of Kennet Square.  As there was no Monthly
Meeting in Kennett until 1815, I believe she and her
husband are probably buried at New Garden Meeting
                House Cemetery.
