MARIA MAGDALENA SCHERER
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
The Hartmann family can be traced in Gellershausen
                bei
                Wildungen,
                Waldeck
                region
                of
Germany to at least mid 1700s.   One
possible set of parents of our Wilhelmina
Hartmann was taken from the Waldeckische
                Ortsippenbucher Band WOB
                62.  (Hochgrebe,
                Heinrich;
                Waldeckischer Geschichtsverein e.V. Bad Arolsen;
1998. History of the village of Gellershausen. Contains
              index
              of family
surnames and data taken mostly from Church records.

first sent me the information.  Evntually I made a
contact in German that got a copy of the book for me.The
Administrator of Gellershausen has also been very
helpful in obtaining a copy and providing other
information.  The Web family is very generous.
              I am very grateful!

Gellershausen
              is
one of 13 small villages that make up the administrative
              community of
Edertal in the small Principality of Waldeck.
              Waldeck
continues as a small city north of Edertal.  Waldeck
              and the
Edertal communities are now part of Hesse Germany.  They lie in the
                northwest of Hesse
and about 40 kilometers southwest of Kassel.
              They are in
the foothills and forests of the low Kellerwald mountain
              range.

Maria Magdalena Scherer
was born on November 9, 1751 in Frebershausen. This
is the next village south of  Gellershausen on the
Wesebach River that flows by both
villages.  By road is it now just over 4 kilometers
away.   Her parents are unknown, the there does
exists another book that would have the information WOB #422.  My
next goal is to get that book.

On September 24, 1773 she married Lorenz Hartmann
              of  Gellershausen.  They settled in
Gellershausen.  At one point he was Grebe of the
town.  I understand that to mean the town
              Administrator.

This couple had the following children:.  All the
              family information is on
page 100 of the WOB #62
              1.  Johann Henrich
Hartmann born June 19, 1774, married Johanette Kruhofer
              and died Sept 26, 1830.
              2.  Johann Henrich
Hartmann born March 10, 1776,  married Christine Mueller and
              died Feb. 3, 1838.
              3.  Carolina Maria
                Margaretha Hartmann born Dec. 4, 1777 - I don't
              know what happened to her.
              4.  Johanna
Elisabeth Hartmann born May 7, 1779, married
Daniel Mueller (not related to Christine) and died March
              19, 1830.
              5.  Johann
Friederich Hartmann born Jan 19, 1781, he died
              march 25, 1838.
              6.  Johanna
Cunigunda Hartmann born Nov 11, 1782 married
Henrich Kraft and died May 13, 1842.
              7.  Johanna Maria
Hartmann born March 20, 1785, she died Nov. 23,
              1832.
              8  Carolina Hartmann
born March 11, 1787 and died the same year.

I am surprised that the first two sons have exactly the
same name.  There may have been an error in the book,
or a given name was left out.

Maria Scherer Hartmann did not survive her last child. Maria died March 14, 1787. She was 36 years old and left 6 or 7 children. The oldest was 13. We can but guess that
she is buried in the church grave yard.
Lorenz Hartmann was married soon after on Aug. 31, 1787 to Anna Maria Joegling von Wellen and had another 7 children.
