WILLIAM CROWELL

THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
Much of the following information came from The Simon Crowell Family by Judith Jo Linenfelser. Documentation is added where it is known.
William Crowell was born in 1780 perhaps in Mecklenburg County North Carolina. re 1850 census. His parents were Simon Crowell and Elizabeth.
William Crowell married Ellen "Nellie" Smith about
              1803 probably in Mecklenburg County.

The family connections come from very close associations
on Census records, noted below and records of  Milas
Crowell, child #6.  when he married a 2nd time,
he named his mother as Nellie Smith.  Marriages
of Jackson County Illinois.  He also gave
affidavit in Robert Crowell's pension application that
he was Robert's uncle.  Robert was the
              son of Benjamin Allen Crowell.

William and Nellie Crowell are believed to have
              had the following children:

There was a Crittenden County KY Court house Will, for
Samuel Crowell, dated 4/22/1868.  His executor
              was "brother Hezikiah Crowell"
Was he the un-named child #4 or one that came after Nancy?

The marriages of Sanders, Nancy and Patsy are all found in Caldwell Ct. Marriages
The family was on the North Carolina 1810 Census in
Mecklenburg on page 498. Capt Moore's company, next
to John Crowell.  At that time the family
2 males <10  Hezikiah, and Benjamin
              1 male 26-44  William
              1 female <10   Sarah Jane

                roll M33_84, page 185 taken Aug. 7, 1820.

              1 female 10-15  Sarah Jane
              1 female 26-44.  Nellie
no slaves - Hezikiah was not on the list with the
family.  He could have been working on another farm,
or old enough to "move on".

I cannot find them on the 1830 or 1840 census.

They moved to Caldwell County, Kentucky sometime
after 1825 and before 1842. William had a brother
Benjamin Crowell who was a very early settler of
the county. According to the genealogist William
Crowell moved on to Crittenden CountyKy.  and
              finally Jackson County, Illinois.

The family reappears 1850 in Jackson county
Illinois.  They are listed in the Census for
Southern District on page 5 and 6
              .on page 5 we have
William Crowell , age 70, farmer born NC &
Nellie Crowell, age 61,  born NC.
next them on one side is
George Crowel, age 33 born NC and his family
              on the other side is
Milas Crowel, age 31, born NC and his family
              on page 6 is
Benjamin Crowel, age 44, born NC and his family.
The daughters seem  to not be so close.

William Crowell died between 1850 and 1870 probably in Jackson Ct. IL. There are no Crowells on the 1860 Illinois Census. The 1870 Census lists his wife Nelly with the Winchester family in Union Ct. Illinois. She died after 1870 at the home of one of her children in either Jackson Ct. or Union Ct. IL.
