THE STORY AS I KNOW IT

Most of the following information came from The Simon Crowell Family by Judith Jo Linenfelser. Documentation is added where it is known.

William Crowell was born in 1780 perhaps in Mecklenburg County North Carolina. His parents were Simon Crowell and Elizabeth.

William Crowell married Ellen "Nellie" Smith about 1803 possibly in Mecklenburg County. They had the following children:
1. Hezikiah Crowell born 1805 wed Milberry. They were in Crittenden Ct. KY in 1850 & 60. He bought land there in 1843 per Crittenden Ct. Court Records.
2. Benjamin Allen Crowell born 1806 Mecklenburg Ct. wed 1st Jane Helms, 2nd Catherine (Goodwin) Holder Crawshaw. They settled in Jackson Ct. IL
3. Sarah Jane Crowell born Aug 1806 (twin to Ben??) wed 1st Thomas Winchester, 2nd William Matthew Winchester (brothers). Also settled in Jackson Ct. IL
4. a son born between 1811 – 1815
5 George Crowell born 1816 wed Susannah McNeely/Malcom. They were in Crittenden Ct. KY in 1850 and Jackson Ct. IL in 1860.
6. . Milas Crowell born 1818 Mecklenburg Ct wed Martha Milstead. They settled in Jackson Ct. IL.
7. Martha A. (Patsy) Crowell born 1820 wed Greenberry Galen Helms April 14, 1842 in Caldwell Ct. Ky.
8. Eleanor (Ellin) Crowell born 1823 wed John Winchester probably in Ky as that was where he was born. They settled in Union Ct. IL
9. Sanders Addison Crowell born 1825 in Mecklenburg Ct. wed 1st Sarah Jane Laughlin in Caldwell Ct KY April 24, 1845 and 2nd Mrs. Martha (Williamson)Dickson. He is buried in Caldwell Ct., KY.
10. Nancy A. Crowell born 1826-1830 wed Holden Brantley May 20, 1847 in Caldwell Ct KY.

The marriages of Sanders, Nancy and Patsy are all found in Caldwell Ct. Marriages

The family was on the North Carolina 1810 Census in Mecklenburg on page 498. They moved to Caldwell County sometime after 1825 and before 1842. William had a brother Benjamin Crowell who was a very early settler of the county. According to the genealogist William moved on to Crittenden County and finally Jackson County, Illinois. All this needs documentation.

William died between 1850 and 1870 probably in Jackson Ct. IL. There are no Crowells on the 1860 Illinois Census. The 1870 Census lists his wife Nelly with the Winchester family in Union Ct. Illinois. She died after 1870 at the home of one of her children in either Jackson Ct. or Union Ct. IL.
